Well, the most basic beginning would be that a MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) is a text-based game. Most often it is a role playing game, and very often it is Fantasy or Science Fiction based. The Lands of Draknor is a fantasy based game.
RACES
When starting there are some important aspects of the game that should be considered. The first being the race you choose. We do not force roleplay, but to get all of the benefits of our game it is required to some degree or another. Your race is the first step on that path. Your race is more important than the way you will act though. For one, eating and drinking must be done more often for larger races, but larger races can use two-handed weapons in one hand. Another thing to consider is the way your race will work with your class. Some races make better casters, while others make better fighters. Help files will help point you in the right direction on these decisions.
CLASSES
We have a variety of classes to choose from, and we have worked hard (and continue to work hard) to make each a unique experience. Because of this it is often fun to try out multiple classes. Making a variety of characters is something that is not only allowed, but welcomed. Some classes are a bit more difficult to play than others. Fighter classes (Knight, Barbarian, and Mystic) tend to be the easiest to play. Casters (Conjurer, Priest, and Druid) tend to be more difficult. There are other classes that are a mix somewhat of the two generalities as well.
CUSTOMIZING
This is a topic that is often asked the most about. First of all, we have strived to make our class default choices definitely worth getting. Each default costs 20 points, where if the class gained each skill within it separately it would equate to 22-25. We did this on purpose. For the most part, only experienced players should stray from gaining the class default. Often though, that is certainly not enough for some players! You want to consider that the more you gain, the more your Creation Points will go up, and the more they go up, the harder it will be to level. This is because your CP's are directly related to how much experience you have to gain per level. You can check this at any time by using the level command.
